Let Operator Tasks Shape The Interface
A useful interface helps operators understand machine status and choose the next appropriate action. Instead of displaying every available value on the home screen, establish a hierarchy around production status, the active job, important messages and primary controls.
Define how starting, stopping, product changeovers, fault handling and maintenance will be performed. Consistent navigation and placement reduce the effort required to learn different screens.
A Practical Interface Review
- Are running, stopped and intervention-required states easy to distinguish?
- Do alarms identify the location and useful checks?
- Are parameter units, permitted ranges and editing permissions clear?
- Are recipe selection and editing distinct tasks?
- Can users find maintenance screens and relevant documentation?
Test Under Real Operating Conditions
Panel size, viewing distance, lighting and glove use affect the design. Review critical operations with representative users and production scenarios. Control permissions and remote access behavior should also form part of the HMI project.
